Land contract with William Browne and Margaret Boyd, 1634.

Manuscript land contract between John Brown (or Browne), the laird of the manor at Carsluith, Kirkandbrightshire, Scotland, and his brother William and brother's wife Margaret Boyd. One document is in Latin, on vellum; the other is in English, on paper (in tatters). Both are written in secretary script. The English document is accompanied by an explanatory note signed by George Lincoln Burr. Housed in a vertical cloth case.

The John Browne (or Brown) of this contract may be the Presbyterian minister who graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 1630 and became minister of the parish of Wamphray, Scotland in 1655. He published many works on religious subjects. From 1662 until his death he was in prison or in exile for his opposition to King Charles II.
